Glares from a past, Glances of a future
Glares from a Past, Glances of a Future presents retrospective work by the artist exploring the body and sport — work made in a time and atmosphere of exclusion and dismissal of non-male athletic bodies. These 2D works and large-scale sculptures are exhibited alongside life-sized silhouettes of real community members who are part of this conversation: teammates, studio mates, lifelong friends. They stand behind and around the work as witnesses, holding space for the change that has unfolded in these realms.
In recent years, we have seen the closest gender parity in Olympic history, the inauguration of the PWHL, the growing advocacy of female and queer athletes, male allies addressing pay gaps, and here in this city, home to the largest inclusive slow pitch league in Canada — a hopeful turn of the tides.
Though equity has not been reached and the conversation must continue, it is important to pause and acknowledge the present: a new world being built for a generation of young athletes, a future unfolding before our eyes.
